Introducing Stellartone's 4x4 Strat system   Back

Stellartone's "4x4" custom pickguard offers a direct replacement for Fender's standard 11-hole pickguard. By replacing the 5-way Strat switch with a 4-way series/parallel switch, and replacing the Strat's center tone knob with a second 4-way series/parallel switch, the traditional five-position Strat comes alive... with a total of thirteen pickup combinations!

Traditional guitar mods can supplement the original 5 Strat circuits, such as the "seven-way Strat" switch which adds the #6 "Tele" neck & bridge pickup combination, and the #7 "all three" pickups combination. These are both useful tones, included within Stellartone's thirteen combinations.

Fender's "S-1" push-button simply adds a phase reverse and/or places one pickup in series, based upon the 5-way switch's position. These five "default circuits" result from inserting a 2-way push switch between the pickups and the stock 5-way lever switch.

The "S-1" switch is simply a marketing gimmick, engineered for low cost and quick installation, apparently without any regard for the actual tonal results. If this set of five "alternate" pickup combinations were all useful and musical, the "S-1" push button would be featured on all Strats! The delicate "S-1" switch remains unpopular, because the five extra circuits were not carefully-chosen by musicians to achieve desirable results.

In sharp contrast, the pair of 4-way heavy-duty switches are purpose-built to provide the original five Strat combinations... plus the two "seven-way" combinations... plus six unique series & series+parallel pickup combinations. Thin and weak "out of phase" pickup combinations are not provided!
